Surgery Update 8.31.2010
by Jeremy on Aug.31, 2010, under Damaged DNA, cancer, pictures
One more surgery down. This was to repair the cataract caused by the radiation treatment four years ago. I have been pretty much blind in this eye for about a year and a half. I put it off and kept putting it off due to moving away from Colorado and then again moving away from Hawaii. We are settled now in Oregon and I was able to get this scheduled and done.
As always, thanks for the thoughts and prayers I appreciate them.
Bicycle Rush Hour in Copenhagen

This video reminds me of this quote:
Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race. – H. G. Wells
I see a little of this in Portland on my commute in daily, but would love to see more. They (TheGovernment) are slowly working towards something like this I believe. It will take a while for the process to roll out.

Pre War Cyclocross

I love this picture. In a way it resembles moments in life to me. There are three different groups in this photo.
The first is the CX racer behind the leaders waiting for his turn up the muck. The second is the actual competing leaders of the race already on the muck. And the last group is the spectators.
At different times in life we are in one of these groups. Sometimes I am just the spectator as another friend, colleague, or family member take the lead roles as I cheer them on. At other times I am the leader blazing that trail, and still other times I am waiting for the leaders to blaze the trail before I push headlong into it.
Either way it is a cool picture.

Comments Off more...4 years out as of today.
by Jeremy on Aug.04, 2010, under Damaged DNA
August 4th 2006 I walked out of St. Joe’s in Denver Colorado after receiving my last radiation treatment. The next four years would find many other repair surgeries and healing, but overall the Cancer was killed. I am healed and better than ever.
Thanks to my Doctors, Family and Friends for the support over the years.
I am a survivor because of them.

This little guy is rocking his running bike. It looks like a modified Strider with full suspension and brakes. Well done little guy, well done. – Jeremy

Breed the grocery-getter
by Jeremy on Aug.03, 2010, under Felt Breed, Pedal Power, commuter
I removed the dropbars and put on a flat bar to try out a different setup on the Breed tonight. I plan on using this as a “within 2 miles” type bike. Getting groceries, going to random places near the house.

We got some new signage on the roads here in Portland. They are called Sharrows. I think they are cool.

31 days of riding in 30 days
by Jeremy on Aug.02, 2010, under 30daysofbiking, Bike to Work, MapMyRide, bike commute, commuter, green living
This month I am trying for 31 days of riding. Even though I commute daily by bike/train/bike I usually only ride the whole thing to work about 2 or 3 times week. I also have a hard time fitting in extra rides on the weekends due to family obligations. Here is what I am going to do:
Ride the whole distance (12.5 miles) at least one way everyday during the week, then on the weekend I will use the singlespeed for short trips and toss in an occasional MTB ride for fun.
With the long ride in as my commute [Beaverton to Portland], I should be able to clear 275ish miles [22 workdays X 12.5 miles]
The extra rides are just gravy on the potatoes.
Why?
Because it is there, that is why. I don’t really need a reason.
August is usually a hot one all over the northern Hemisphere so everyone should be able to get at least 20 days in. It is a good prep for the Winter as you are drilling in your thick skull to ride more. At least for me it is.
If you need motivational help there is a Twitter hash tag #30daysofbiking that you can tweet to and follow along. Started by these guys. There is also a Reddit page to account for miles if you are on there.
YOU CAN DO THIS. I say to myself
Have fun, and be safe out there.
Jeremy
PS The 31st day of August is my eye surgery, so I may have to skip that day
